What are the various degrees that I can get from an online university?


When online universities where in their infancy, the opportunities were quite limited for those seeking an online education. Nowadays, there is a huge variety of online degrees available, and if a degree is offered physically it is a good bet that it can be found online. The many kinds of degrees can be differentiated by levels of degrees and subject matter of degrees.

First, the different levels of degrees. Length of time, difficulty of a degree and the subject matter all contribute to a degrees respectability and worth.

The fastest and cheapest is the associate degree. When getting a university degree, many choose to do the first two years of study at a cheaper college and transfer to the university of their choice. Associate degrees, offered online, are two year degrees which can be used on their own or to lead into a bachelor’s degree. These degrees are suited for familiarizing oneself with a specific topic and for accreditation in career fields which value a level of education in applicants. These are the quickest degrees offered online.

Bachelor’s degrees, which are generally 4 year programs in campus based education, are also offered online. Often, there are options to finish these degrees quicker than those offered traditionally. Bachelor’s degrees are one of the most common degrees chosen, and can build out of a 2 year Associate’s degree.

Master’s degrees are the next step for some after a Bachelors. These are often pursued by those entering a highly competitive field, or those who wish to advance in their career choice. After a Master’s, the only degree higher is the PHD. These are quite rare online at this point, but can be found online in select universities.


In fact, almost all levels of degrees are offered online. This versatility is matched by the subject matter of degrees. Accounting degrees, MBAs, and nursing degrees can all be found online, as well as a wide range of Bachelor’s degrees ranging from liberal arts to hard sciences. Another hugely popular degree choice is in computer sciences and IT, as the technological medium is conducive to an online degree which allows quick dissemination of course materials. Other popular degrees online are those centered in Business and Nursing.

The popularity of certain degrees goes to show the motives of those interested in an online degree. When asking oneself what kinds of degrees can I get from an online university, understanding supply and demand can lead to the answer. Online degrees are hugely popular to those who are in a job but wish to get ahead, which shows the prevalence of degrees which lead directly into careers. These degrees, such as technological and computer degrees, healthcare oriented degrees, and business degrees, are all oriented to the type of person who is taking a degree online. Online degrees are streamlined, functional, and most of all developed towards getting ahead in life.
